JANUARY 25–28 & FEBRUARY 1–4 Visit one of winter’s
hottest events and discover a giant ice slide, interactive
activities, live entertainment, and the International Ice Carving
Competition at the Ice on Whyte Festival. The competition
has attracted artists from as far away as Russia, Malaysia,
New Zealand, and Mexico, and the winners compete in the
Canada Cup of Ice Carving—which in 2019 will be held in
Edmonton! Participate in a drop-in ice-carving lesson in an
inflatable igloo, or chill out with friends in the Ice Bar with
locally crafted beers and spirits. End of Steel Park, Gateway
Blvd. & Tommy Banks Way, $4–$7; tickets available at the
gate or visit iceonwhyte.ca for more information.

FEBRUARY 23 & 24 Are you “Getting
Ready to Get Down?” For 20 years,
American musician Josh Ritter has blended
folk, gospel, and rock and roll for his own
distinctive Americana style. Considered
one of the 100 greatest living songwriters,
he is on tour with the Royal City Band and
his new album, Gathering. Arden Theatre, 5

FEBRUARY 23–25 The Citie Ballet’s second
performance of the season highlights
the new works of emerging artists. Aptly
named Intersect, this powerful performance
will bring together two dynamic pieces.
Get swept away by the energy of former
Les Ballet Jazz de Montreal soloist Brett
Taylor. His dance, “Gate 3,” narrates
the emotional intersections of human
movement, while Edmonton choreographer
Kiera Keglowitsch’s piece explores artistic
creation and the mental exertions and self-
thinking required. Her work will be framed
by digitized projections created by artists
from the Nina Haggerty Centre for the Arts.
Timms Centre for the Arts, University of
Alberta, 112 St. & 87 Ave., $35–$45; call 780-
420-1757 or visit citieballet.ca for tickets.
