KING OF CRAFT: CRAIG PEARSON
Craig Pearson moved to Calgary in 2005,
with the plan to stay for a few years, finish
two degrees, then move home to Grand
Prairie. Funny how things change. By the
end of his first school year he thought about
pursuing brewing beer. Ten years ago he was
fortunate to land a position with Brewsters
Brewing Co and started working full time in
the brewery, continuing to perfect his craft. In
the spring of 2014 he became Head Brewer at
Brewsters Brewing Co, followed by Brewery
Manager. In November 2016 he joined one
of Calgary's newest brewpubs, Trolley 5, as
head brewer. “I try to stay on trend while
adding something different to help round it
out,” Craig says of his approach to brewing.
Trolley 5’s most popular beer, the White IPA,
is a crowd-pleaser. “It’s a very approachable
Belgian White Ale that is hopped up but still
has a strong citrus character,” Craig says. Or,
try the latest and greatest: the new Cranberry
Wit in May and the Cowboy Crusher ISA in
June.

KING OF CRAFT: BRIAN SMITH
Brian Smith has two degrees from the
University of Calgary, but more importantly,
he knows great beer thanks to crafting
thousands of batches for Wild Rose Brewery
and other independent brewers. He currently
leads the brewing operations at Wild
Rose, which started brewing its craft beer
in Calgary in 1996. As the popularity of
craft beer continues to grow, so does Wild
Rose, but they continue to brew in small
batches with a huge focus on the quality
of ingredients (which includes malt barley
and some wheat that may have been grown
by you) that goes into every batch. Their
beers are supplied exclusively to Alberta, so
consider yourself lucky to live here.
