EDITOR’S NOTE
Welcome to a new season in Calgary!
Springtime means the return of some favourite
festivals, restaurants set up their patio
furniture, and attractions open their doors for
the season. To enjoy some top-notch food and
drinks paired with an unbeatable view and
unique atmosphere, I suggest an alfresco fine
dining experience (page 20). This allows you
to enjoy the warm sunshine, calming views,
and a great meal with friends and family —
maybe for a special occasion such as Mother’s
Day or Father’s Day? When you’re watching
your budget (or just love a good deal) we’ve
rounded up some food and drink combos
that are satisfying, good quality, and won’t
break the bank. Preparations are underway in
Calgary for elaborate Canada Day celebrations
on June 30 and July 1. As Southern Alberta’s
host city for Canada Day, Calgary has decided
to extend the celebrations for two days to
pack in all of the fun activities, shows, music,
fireworks, and food that will be used to
celebrate 150 years of confederation. If you
won’t be in Calgary for the main event, don’t
fret — many venues and events are hosting
Canada 150-themed activities throughout
the year (page 22), so you can experience
all the different ways that various industries,
histories, and cultures contribute to what
makes Canada — and Calgary — the place
it is today. One local tradition that’s become
a Canadian tradition is the Caesar cocktail.
This concoction was first stirred up in Calgary
in 1969 with its signature base of tomato
juice and clam broth, and has since become a
mainstay of bar menus in Canada — but not
really anywhere else in the world. Throughout
the years, bartenders have found ways to put
their own twist on this savoury beverage, and
we’ve found five unique ones here in Calgary
(page 48). Cheers!
