WE ARE ALL TREATY PEOPLE
MAY 24 Designed for a young audience , We Are All Treaty People tells the story of the spirit , intent , and historical significance of Treaty 7 . In the play , two grade six girls meet a trickster who reveals their complex shared history of their land ; Alanna is from the Tsuu T ’ ina Nation , while Maya is of European
descent . As the story of southern Alberta and Treaty 7 unfolds , the girls explore if they can still become friends amidst the struggles of the past . Using songs , prayers , creative movements , and puppetry , this play hopes to inspire positive relationships across all cultures and generations ( page 33 ).
SCOTIABANK CALGARY MARATHON
MAY 25 - MAY 28 Cheer on the runners in this Boston Marathon qualifier , which attracts thousands of participants every year . The race will celebrate Canada ’ s 150th with a route that celebrates each province and territory of Canada with 13 “ party zones ” consisting of region-specific activities , food and music for nonracers ( page 32 ).
CANADA DAY
JUNE 30 - JULY 1 The festivities begin with a powwow at Prince ’ s Island Park that will turn into performances of contemporary music and dance . On July 1 , Canada Day festivities begin at Fort Calgary . Start the day with a free pancake breakfast at 8 am , followed by live music , traditional Indigenous games and stories , food trucks ,
military showcases , and more activities . Finish the night with a firework show from the Centre Street Bridge ( page 32 ).
JOURNEY OF A LIFETIME
July 1 - August 30 On July 1 , Heritage Park will have a pancake breakfast for the first 2017 guests , and will then unveil their brand-new exhibit and performance , A Journey of A Lifetime , featuring the ongoing restoration of one of Canada ’ s national treasures — a 1905 wooden Colonist Rail Car ( one of only two left in the country ) — that played a major role in the settlement of western Canada . Watch the restoration process along with an interactive exhibit , and a bilingual play that brings the settler experience to life ( page 29 ).
NATIONAL PARKS AND HISTORIC SITES
Through December 31 , 2017 All National Parks and Historic Sites in Canada are offering free admission in 2017 . This includes 19 places in Alberta such as Banff National Park , Waterton Lakes National Park , and Bar U Ranch National Historic Site ( page 56 ).

June 21 is National Aboriginal Day , a day to recognize and celebrate the heritage , culture , and contributions of the First Nations people who lived on the land for thousands of years before confederation .
GLENBOW MUSEUM explores the stories of Canada ’ s first inhabitants , with Inuit carvings , Plains quillwork , and designs created by Northwest Coast Peoples . Learn more about the
Heritage Park traditions and history of the Blackfoot people through interactive displays and artifacts ( page 27 ).
At HERITAGE PARK , the First Nations Encampment represents a gathering place for First Nations , Métis , explorers , settlers , and traders . Three canvas tipis illustrate the lifestyle of the Plains First Nations during the last half of the 19th century . First Nations interpreters demonstrate traditional activities , artifacts , and share stories from their culture ( page 29 ).
