ASK THE EXPERT KENT HEHR MP Calgary Centre and Minister of Veterans Affairs How would you recommend spending the May long weekend in Calgary? I enjoy heading out to Heritage Park (page 29) with family for their opening weekend. Another thing that I wouldn’t miss is the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra playing Raiders of the Lost Ark (page 30). It's also worth a visit to the only urban- centered, federally recognized bird sanctuary in Canada, Inglewood Bird Sanctuary (page 29). Where are some places to shop for a unique Mother’s Day or Father’s Day gift? I dropped into these two shops the other day between meetings. One was Inspirati Style (page 38), a family-run store that sells fine linens and home essentials. There are some pretty cool things that any mother, father, or loved one would enjoy. I also was able to sneak into Supreme Men’s Wear (page 37) to pick up some shirts and socks the other week. You can’t miss the lions, their team is excellent, and their ties are top notch. What are some of your favourite spring festivals or events? You can’t miss Lilac Festival on June 4 (page 30). If you see me there come by, get a Hehr balloon, and chat me up. Calgary will be hosting its first annual Calgary Chinese Cultural Centre Street Festival from July 1 - July 7 right in the heart of Calgary. Not only will we be celebrating our 150th birthday as a nation, but also sharing the myriad of cultures that make up the jewel of downtown Calgary. There’s also the street fair in East Village on July 1 that’s a must-see (page 30). 10 where.ca MAY/JUNE 2017 What’s something new or seasonal in Calgary that you recommend trying? Many Calgarians and Albertans haven’t realized it yet, but Calgary is host to a burgeoning brewery scene. Take a few hours to talk to Blake at Cold Garden in Inglewood, Patrick at Outcast, Jim at Village Brewery, the good people at Wild Rose, High Line Brewing, and Banded Peak Brewing. They have local brews, excellent venues for events, and tours (page 44).
