GETTING AROUND
BOW RIVER PATHWAY This loop of paved pathway runs
along both sides of the beautiful Bow River, providing an
excellent route for running, walking, and biking. On the
north bank, which can be accessed from downtown by
passing through Prince’s Island Park or crossing the red
Peace Bridge, the path extends eight kilometres (five
miles) to Shouldice Athletic Park, where it connects
via bridge to the south bank path, leading back to

PARKING Parking is generally free in Calgary except
downtown where you can expect to pay $15 to $30 per
day to park. In most cases, parking is free on public streets
after 6 pm Mon to Sat and all day Sun. Some streets
still feature parking meters, however, the new ParkPlus
curbside system requires only a license plate, four digit
zone number and payment in either coin or credit. The
ticket does not need to be displayed in the vehicle.

QUADRANT SYSTEM Calgary addresses are defined
by a city quadrant system. Centre Street separates the
east from the west, and the Bow River in the downtown
area roughly divides north and south. Addresses in each
quadrant are identified with the appropriate NE, NW,
SE, SW designations. There are four possible locations,
so knowing the quadrant is important. For instance, the
corner of 9 Ave and 9 St occurs twice on Map 2: once in
the SE and once in the SW.
NEIGHBOURHOODS
17 AVENUE SW A vibrant nightlife, retail and restaurant
district just south of downtown. Known for its high
concentration of bars, pubs and clubs, and its position
as the base of Calgary’s oldest upscale residential

BANKVIEW The historic inner city community of
Bankview encompasses the area between 17 Ave and 26
Ave SW, between 14 St and 19 St SW. The area is best
known for its cosmopolitan feel and for 17th Avenue,
its bustling shopping and nightlife strip, which is also

BRIDGELAND One of Calgary’s first suburbs, which
emerged as a magnet for Italian and Ukrainian immigrants
during the early days of the 20th century. Today it is
an enclave for food connoisseurs, who can find cafés,
bistros, and a high concentration of Italian restaurants. It
also boasts a picturesque location on the north shore of

CHINATOWN A small but flourishing downtown
community, flanked on the west by the Chinese Cultural
Centre. Offering an array of Chinese cuisine, along with
modern stores, small grocers and herbal shops. You’ll
