Map 1 L5 www.lougheedhouse.com Winston Churchill is famed for leading Great Britain to victory in the Second World War, but a lesser-known fact is that he was also an enthusiastic painter, creating hundreds of paintings over the course of his lifetime. He even painted BC’s Emerald Lake when he took a trip to the Canadian Rockies in 1929 — and that painting is now available for anyone in Calgary to view at Masters Gallery (page 27). According to a statement from Masters Gallery, it’s the only one of Churchill’s paintings of a Canadian subject left in private hands — and it’s the first time it’s been back on Canadian soil since it was painted. Ryan Green, the owner of Masters Gallery, won it at auction on the Sotheby’s of London auction website for just over $87,000. Soil and seeds of native and invasive weed species were collected from the construction site across from Esker and elsewhere in the neighbourhood. These seeds are grown in the Esker Project Space throughout the exhibition. In this work, the artists hope to explore the distribution of plants in relation to development and the perception of various plants in the neighbourhood.
