Theatre Calgary is the city’s
oldest professional theatre
company, which stages
everything from classics to innovative
and groundbreaking contemporary plays.
Watch The Humans (page 34), a critically acclaimed
Broadway play that shines a light on tensions
facing modern families. Set inside a Manhattan
apartment, the Blake family gathers for
Thanksgiving dinner. Things quickly get heated
and resentments and family secrets come to
the surface in this comedy-drama. Revisit
a classic with The Secret Garden (page 34),
which is a musical version of the beloved
story of orphan Mary Lennox, who is sent to live
with her reclusive uncle on his large estate. When she discovers
the key to a secret garden, everything changes.
See something you’ve never seen before at Glenbow through
the exhibit Frida Kahlo: Her Photos (page 29), which brings
a selection of the artist’s photographs to Calgary.
The Esker Foundation (page 30)
continues to push the boundaries of
contemporary art with innovative
exhibitions, including DaveandJenn’s
collaborative and distinctive
sculptures at one of their most recent
exhibits.
The Food
You can’t beat Italian for date night.
Thanks to Lady and the Tramp, spaghetti
and meatballs will always be tied to
romance.
Pulcinella (page 48) boasts a
traditional menu in a contemporary
setting. Owner Domenic Tudda imports
ingredients from Italy to ensure his pizza
is the genuine article. Dough is made fresh
in-house daily, and the restaurant is certified
by the Associazione Pizzaioli Napoletani as
being authentically Neapolitan. Thanks to Tudda’s
frequent trips to Italy to keep up to date on cooking
trends, you’ll get a true experience of the Italian kitchen.
A modern Italian restaurant, Cardinale (page 48) is
housed in the historic Dafoe building in Victoria Park. This
eatery serves pasta made in-house daily, hand-crafted
cocktails made with Italian spirits and fine Italian wine, in
a lovely space with exposed brick and green velvet booths.
Experience traditional Italian cooking with a twist, from
brisket and short-rib meatballs cooked in Sunday gravy to
gnocchi and mezze maniche in unbelievably creamy sauce.
Bonterra Trattoria (page 48) serves up classic and
gourmet Italian fare in a beautiful space. When
you walk through their doors, you feel like you’ve
stepped into a café in Italy thanks to an intimate
and rustic space. Try the four-course tasting menu
for a full experience with phenomenal service; it’s a
favourite with locals.
