Interested in expanding your wine palate beyond “ white ” and “ red ”? Sign up for one of The Cellar Wine Store ’ s ( page 40 ) tasting events . Tour the wines of the Pacific Northwest , learn what the difference is between Bordeaux and Burgundy or get an insight into how wines are rated by Wine Spectator . They also host tastings that feature everything from Scotch to quality rums from around the world . No matter what you drink , there ’ s something for everyone .
If you ’ re a dedicated beer drinker , or hoping to learn more about your beloved brewski , book a Beer 101 tour with Wild Rose Brewery ( page 45 ). Not only do you get a behind-the-scenes look at a craft beer brewery , but you get to sample all their beers too . This is truly a taste of Alberta , thanks to Wild Rose being 100 percent Alberta-owned and operated , and their craft beer is only available in the province . From their core beers , the IPA , Velvet Fog and WRaspberry Ale are well known and loved .
LIVE MUSIC IN CALGARY
The Palace Theatre ( page 32 ) is a historic movie house that ’ s been home to films , vaudeville acts , orchestra performances and more over the nine decades since it first opened . There ’ s rich history here — in 1922 , the first public radio broadcast in Calgary took place in the building . Today it ’ s a live music venue that has welcomed musicians from a range of genres , from theatrical punk band Gogol Bordello to trance DJ Paul Oakenfold .
Aussie Rules ( page 34 ) features two dueling pianos that rock out everything from classic rock to even some hip hop and R & B hits ( using their tremendous talent to make it up on the fly ). Standing up , clapping your hands and singing along is the norm here . They welcome song requests , but keep in mind they ’ re using pianos and not turntables ! They ’ ll knock out a rendition of “ Baby Got Back ,” but it ’ s not quite the same ( or as fair to them ) as requesting a piano classic like " Bennie and the Jets ."
The Palomino ( page 42 ) is famous for their slowsmoked meats and rustic , Western-inspired space that hosts roaring live music . Check out talented local and touring rock bands here on weekends . Make sure you order a round of their potent garlic fries — but bring the breath mints .
