ON THE TOWN JUST FOR YOU If you’re in the mood to treat yourself to some luxury or perhaps pick up a souvenir, head to Shades of Sleep (page 40) in Inglewood for true luxury in the form of the softest, most comfortable pyjamas and bedding that will put even five- star hotels to shame. Or, swing over to Steeling Home (page 39) on 17th Avenue SW for fun and quirky gifts, home décor and Canadiana. Movie Night Catching a film is a great way to treat yourself to… yourself. No talking, no fighting over the popcorn and you get both armrests—ideal. The Calgary Underground Film Festival (April 16 - 22, page 34) is a can’t-miss for movie buffs. This quirky fest is all about films that defy convention, from horror, sci-fi and fantasy to comedies, thrillers and music-related films. Keep an eye out for special events and features that showcase local and international indie filmmakers. Outside of CUFF, hit up Calgary’s grand old dames of indie film. Located in Kensington since 1935, The Plaza Theatre (page 32) is Calgary’s longest-running theatre and is devoted to alternative and independent programming that is sometimes challenging—but never boring. Just a hop, skip and jump away in the heart of downtown, Globe Cinema (page 32) is a classic movie house that proudly shows first-run films and unusual selections you may not find elsewhere. The Globe is also licensed to serve alcohol, which adds a little spice to movie night. MARCH/APRIL 2018 where.ca 21
