ASK THE EXPERT NAHEED NENSHI Mayor of Calgary What’s your favourite part of the Calgary Stampede? My absolute favourite part of the Calgary Stampede is the feeling in Calgary during this time. This is truly a city-wide festival and everyone gets in the spirit. You can see it best in the hundreds of community pancake breakfasts and barbecues held in everzy corner of our city. Of course, the best part of being mayor is riding my horse at the front of the Stampede Parade. That never gets old. Where’s a good place to get some barbecue? Like all proper cities, Calgary is home to barbecue styles from across the globe. African, Korean, Japanese, Brazilian, Indian, and Western barbecue are all amazing flavour options to help you scratch your barbecue itch. Calgarians truly do love grilled food, and we’re good at making it. Some of my favourites are the beef ribs at Africana (page 64), Tiffin (page 64), and Safari Grill (page 64) (they compete for the best), and Minas (page 67) for Brazilian. And for traditional southern barbecue, you can’t go wrong with Hayden Block (page 51), which also has some of the best customer service in the city. And half-price after 10 pm! Or, if you’re near City Hall, the Palomino (page 51) has a great vibe and music combined with excellent food. Where can a visitor find a truly “Calgary” souvenir? Do yourself a favour and visit Calgary’s own Smithbilt Hats (page 49). They’re the maker of our city’s traditional White Hat and a 99-year-old institution. From the top of your head to the tip of your toes, you should also visit Alberta Boot Co. (page 49). I have three pairs of their boots in my wardrobe, and I love them. Stylish and comfortable. Tell Ben the mayor sent you. Where do you go when you want to unwind and relax? I always look forward to the Calgary Folk Music Festival (page 32) in late July. There’s nothing quite like sitting on a beautiful urban island with thousands of your closest friends while listening to some of the best music in the world. 12 where.ca JULY/AUGUST 2018
