EDITOR’S NOTE
THE LIVIN’ IS EASY
Stampede is undoubtedly a huge deal in
Calgary. It’s our signature event, the busiest
time of year, when we pull out all the stops.
It’s our chance to show off our city and
hospitality to the rest of the world, and yes,
we like to get a little wild too.
Some visitors get the impression that Calgary
is in Stampede-mode all the time and while
that’s not quite true, the spirit of Stampede
does linger throughout the year. You can find
it on the walls of art galleries (page 24), in the
windows of shopping boutiques (page 40)
and on the tables of restaurants (page 50).
Barbecue beef-on-a-bun is an old Stampede
staple from way back, and delicious
inspiration from the southern United States is
popping up on menus across the city. These
chefs are doing it right, lovingly tending to
massive smokers filled with Alberta-grown
meat to create barbecue that would do Texas,
Missouri and Carolina proud (page 20).
But, make no mistake — there’s a lot more
happening in Calgary than just Stampede.
Our summer season isn’t long, but we make
the most of it with a jam-packed calendar
of festivals and fun events catering to every
taste imaginable (page 14).
Whether you’re here during Stampede or any
other time, we’re excited to have the chance to
show you what makes our city special. Just one
tip: we say yahoo, not yeehaw, around these
here parts — as in, yahoo, it’s time to party!

JULY/AUGUST 2018
August culminates in Calgary Pride, a week
of events in support and honour of the city’s
LGBT community. We found some delicious
ways to celebrate while supporting worthy
causes like Camp fYrefly, an educational,
social and personal leadership retreat for
queer and trans youth (page 52).
