Course Name: Advanced Physics Principles / Robotics Type of Course: Core Course Available to: 11th and 12th grade
Prerequisites: AP Physics II( 80 %+) OR AP Physics C: Mechanics( 80 %+)
Description: This is a post-AP course that is designed for students who excel in AP Physics courses and will consist of students working independently and collaboratively in the research, design, development of robotics and automation technologies. There will be an emphasis on the application and integration of physics and technological principles in this course. Students will be introduced to the principles of robotics and automation and the role of robotics in industry and business through research, expert speakers, and site visits. They will apply their math, physical science, physics and technological skills and knowledge to the design and development of an array of robotic mechanisms. Students will learn and apply relevant computer programming languages in the process. Working in teams, students will build working robots which can accomplish specific predetermined goals and entering nationally recognized high-stakes robotics competitions. Students earn an additional 1.0 quality point towards their GPA for this course.
Course Name: Advanced Organic Chemistry I Type of Course: Core Course Available to: 11th and 12th grade
Prerequisites: AP Chemistry( 74 %+)
Description: This is a post-AP course that is designed to mimic a sophomore level organic chemistry experience on the undergraduate level. The course will center on fundamental organic chemistry with emphasis on molecular structure and reaction mechanisms. In addition, more advanced topics including stereochemistry and regiospecific organic transformations will be discussed as well as 1H, 13C, IR and mass spectroscopy for the identification and confirmation of molecular structure. A good understanding of introductory chemistry is necessary; therefore, successful completion of AP Chemistry is a prerequisite for this course. Students earn an additional 1.0 quality point towards their GPA for this course.
Course Name: Magnet Scientific Research III( Advanced Organic Chemistry II)
Type of Course: Core Course
Available to: 11th and 12th grade
Prerequisites: Advanced Organic Chemistry I( 74 %+)
Description: This post-AP course is designed to mimic a sophomore level organic chemistry experience on the undergraduate level. The course will build on topics learned in the prerequisite course and will focus more heavily on organic reactions and multistep organic transformations. An emphasis will be placed on a systematic study of organic functional group reactivity including: aromatic rings and aromaticity, carbonyl chemistry, as well as alcohols and amines. Students earn an additional 0.5 quality point towards their GPA for this course.
