brettapproved® Travel Tip of the Month
At brettapproved.com, our goal is to help members of our community travel confidently. We hope you find value in our monthly “travel tip.”
Check Airline Policies
Preparation and planning ahead is always one of the most important aspects of travel, particularly if you’re doing so with mobility challenges. One of the best ways to avoid unexpected obstacles when traveling by plane is to get familiar with the airline’s policies and procedures specific to passengers with disabilities. Keep in mind, rules and regulations pertaining to accessibility are not universal amongst major carriers.
Nearly every major airline has a policy page on their website or contact information specifically for travelers who have a physical disability or mobility impairment. Among other things, these policies state that individuals traveling with a wheelchair will need to notify the airline 48 hours in advance of their flight. Our experience at brettapproved is that you should provide this notice a good deal earlier, and then follow-up to confirm closer to your departure.
For your convenience we’ve included links to several airline special assistance policy pages here:
As always, the key is to avail yourself of this information well in advance of your trip to avoid last minute hurdles.
