Letter from the Director:

Message from the Executive Director,

Welcome to the August edition of Wheel World News. As many of you are aware, Paul Mortensen has retired as Executive Director to enjoy time with his family as well as get some well-deserved rest. The work he has done within the SCI community will never be forgotten and will continue on through the work of the Association. As the new Executive Director, I am honored and excited to lead the Association with the same compassion and drive as Paul did before me.

As we transition into this new phase of growth we are preparing to offer our community updated and retooled quality of life programs. The work we do is important and we will always strive to serve everyone who calls upon us. As your new Executive Director, I take seriously the mission of the Association and will continue to call upon our community members to assist us in ensuring we are meeting the needs of our community.

Inside this newsletter you will find some great ways to get involved. On pages 2-3 you will find an announcement for our current fundraiser: 5K Wheel-A-Thon. This fundraiser, in honor of SCI awareness month in September, will help create new quality of life programs for individuals with SCI. Your support is invaluable to our organization as we continue to advocate for our community. On pages 8-9 you will also see the announcement for our new educational series: Living Healthy with SCI. This monthly educational series will provide healthy living tips and various practices to help improve your quality of life. We hope you join us!

Since 1999, the Association has continued to grow with the same goals in mind; provide resource facilitation, educational opportunities, peer support services and quality of life programs for those with spinal cord injury, their families, caregivers and the professionals who work in the field.

I encourage you to stop by our office to say hello or give us a call anytime. Please let us know of any suggestions or ideas you may have to improve current or future quality of life programs, we truly value your opinion.

Sincerely,

Shannon L. Carter

Executive Director
