Under law; Horse Slaughter

Horse slaughter is a term used to define "killing for commercial product," or profit.

If someone pulled a machine gun and mowed down 100 horses the media and public would rightly label it a slaughter.

As we discuss current threats to equines under the "slaughter" word, lets define how it is used in legal jargon.

However when we discuss legislation we need to keep the terms clear; language creates law and sometimes the words chosen create a frame of law that stops something it doesn't place the urban dictionary terms into.

When we address Congress we need to remember that they are the Legislation branch of government, the law makers. We ran an entire webinar series to explain the distinctions between these branches and how the lines are starting to blur in practice.

The image to the right is linked to a "lesson plan" created by USA.gov to teach how the branches of government work. You can click it and use it to try to help others understand.

Wild Horses

The legal protections afforded a wild horse are attached to "jurisdiction." The terms "wild" and "feral" are also simply legal definitions under a legal conversation yet represent an entirely different philosophical one.

Once a horse that lived on Bureau of Land Management (BLM) or Forest Service (FS) land has been adopted or sold, the legal definition of a "wild horse" is lost. After that it is governed by domestic ownership law.

A wild horse is the only animal in our country not defined by what it is, but where it stands.~ LLeigh
