DIY BANGALORE
While Bangalore is a safe and friendly city to negotiate,
we list some must-dos and just-don'ts to make your stay
more rewarding
·
Opt for the day-long
sightseeing tour,
'Bangalore Rounds'
offered by the BMTC. This
trip, in an air-conditioned
Volvo bus, covers the city's
prominent tourist sights. The tour kicks
off at 8am daily from the Kempegowda
Bus Stand in Majestic. Call 080-12667 to
reserve a seat.
Do’s
·
If street shopping is your thing, then do
walk the bylanes of Commercial Street,
Brigade Road and Shivajinagar. You can
expect to find interesting bric-a-brac, and
unusual clothes and jewellery at bargain
prices.
·
Stop by at MTR on Lalbagh Road and
Vidyarthi Bhavan in Gandhi Bazaar to
sample a crisp, buttery masala dosa and a
cup of super-strong filter coffee. These
eateries tend to be rather crowded, but the
wait is definitely worthwhile.
·
If you are heading to Mysore, make a
stop en route at Janapada Loka, a folk art
museum on Mysore Road. Round off the
tour with a delicious traditional North
Karnataka meal at Kamat Lokaruchi, set
next to the museum.
·
Cubbon Park, Lalbagh and the
Bannerghatta National Park are the green
lungs of Bangalore. These massive parks
are part of the city's heritage and a must-
visit on any tourist itinerary.
·
Afternoons are well-spent sampling the
city's numerous cafes. Koshy's, India
Coffee House and Airlines Hotel are some
old favourites, while the new breed
includes Café Noir, Café Fresco's, Rogue
Elephant, Raintree Cafe, Java City, Mocha
and Café Cofee Day and Barista outlets.
·
Catch a play or a dance/music
performance at Rangashankara,
Chowdaiah Memorial hall or Ravindra
Kalakshetra. Local theatre groups as well
as those from out-of-town perform at
these venues on a regular basis.
·
Mall rats can spend an entire day
shopping and eating at Bangalore's
numerous malls – Garuda, Forum, Mantri
Square and Sigma are some of the popular
ones.
·
Do allot ample time to explore the
hundreds of restaurants dotting the city,
offering a smorgasbord of global cuisines.
From gourmet restaurants to small
eateries, there's something to suit different
budgets and food proclivities. Just follow
your nose!
·
A pub-hop is must-do when in
Bangalore. Enjoy beers or cocktails at any
of the city's pubs and lounge bars. Or just
follow the pub trail along the Church
Street-Residency Road axis.
·
Bangalore is a big wellness destination.
So do take time out to indulge in holistic
therapies at its numerous luxury spas and
Ayurvedic centres. Flip to our 'What's the
Secret' section for recommendations.
·
To explore the innards of the city, we
suggest you try the 'Bangalore Walks'.
These guided walking tours are a
refreshing way to discover the history and
landscape of specific areas. Trails include
the Traditional Bangalore walk, the
Victorian Bangalore walk, the Lalbagh
walk etc. Log onto bangalorewalks.com for
