WHAT’S UP | JULY 2017 ISSUE I started my career first at Ford Rhodes Thornton & Co. in 1956, which was located in the Times of Ceylon building. The best memories of my time in the firm, are that of the guidance, teachings and discipline instilled in me through the charismatic leadership throughout the years. Back then all the work was carried out manually and checked by the relevant seniors in charge. The relationships fostered with my superiors were ones to cherish. Lal Fernando 61 Years at KPMG Working in Audit gave me the opportunity to travel out of Colombo to the upcountry areas and spend days or even weeks. The team often worked from 8.00 am and when we return to the place we were staying, we would organize a little celebration for ourselves. Over the years people would often ask me why I stayed at KPMG for such a long period; From the day I joined, the whole experience of working at KPMG has been outstanding. I’ve been able to achieve all my goals that I had. I didn’t have a reason to leave and I still don’t. I joined as a happy person and now, I’m a very happy person. S.P. Kalatuwawa 50 Years at KPMG I joined KPMG in the year 1967 on the 3rd of June and I was the first lady to join the Tax Department as a Tax Clerk. It is now 50 years since I joined KPMG and my stay has indeed been a delightful and memorable 50 years. One of my fondest memories in the firm was the time I played in the firm’s netball and cricket teams. We were some of the few girls who represented the teams at the time. The firm also had amazing socials that we would often attend and enjoy.” Fifty years at KPMG has been a long journey. Mr. Lal Fernando and Mr. Kalatuwawa have also gone through the same memorable journey, completing more than 50 years with the Firm. I really enjoy my work at KPMG and I consider it as my second home.
