As at the end of World War II, Italy has experienced profound economic changes, which
in many ways still backward country, with an income equal to only 36% of the U.S. and
42.2% of the population employed in agriculture led it to become, in the following
decades, one of the largest economies in the world, thanks to a continuous process of
economic growth, which lasted until the late nineties of the twentieth century.
During this phase, the gradual reduction in the primary sector (agriculture, livestock
and fisheries) in favor of the industrial and service sectors has been accompanied by
profound changes in the socio-productive system, as a result of massive migration from
the South to the industrial areas of the Centre-North thanks to a strong pushed new
urbanization, linked to the parallel transformation of the labor market.
