Art and Culture BELGIUM René Magritte, a Belgian painter By Sabine and Eleonora Short bibliography: René François Ghislain Magritte is a surreal painter who was born in Belgium to Lessines (in Hainaut) on the 21th November 1898 and who death on Tuesday the 15th August. The Magritte Museum: The Magritte Museum is located in an old neoclassical building dating from the end of XVIIIth century and part of an architectural ensemble built after the fire Dupalais Coudenberg in 1731. Centuries after centuries, the owners have succeeded to transform it into a hotel, jewellery and finally a museum. His work His paintings often play between an object and its representation. For example, one of his most famous paintings is a picture of pipe in which the text “This is not a pipe”. It is in fact to consider the object as a reality. To explain what he wanted to show through this work, Magritte said: “Can you fill my pipe? No, it is not, it is only a representation. So if I had written on my picture ‘This is a pipe’, I have lied!” Similarly, Magritte shows by his works that the painting is not a mirror of reality. I hope you love paintings because I do.
