By Sabine and Eleonora
Short bibliography:
René François Ghislain Magritte is a surreal painter who
was born in Belgium to Lessines (in Hainaut) on the 21th
November 1898 and who death on Tuesday the 15th

The Magritte Museum:
The Magritte Museum is located in an
old neoclassical building dating from
the end of XVIIIth century and part of
an architectural ensemble built after
the fire Dupalais Coudenberg in 1731.
Centuries after centuries, the owners
have succeeded to transform it into a
hotel, jewellery and finally a museum.
His work
His paintings often play between an object and its
representation. For example, one of his most famous
paintings is a picture of pipe in which the text “This is not
a pipe”. It is in fact to consider the object as a reality. To
explain what he wanted to show through this work,
Magritte said: “Can you fill my pipe? No, it is not, it is
only a representation. So if I had written on my picture
‘This is a pipe’, I have lied!”
Similarly, Magritte shows by his works
that the painting is not a mirror of
reality.
I hope you love paintings because I
do. That was part of what I wanted to
