TRAVEL
Blanchetown
The town the railway forgot!
Blanchetown grew
because politicians
promised a railway, and
then diverted it to Morgan,
just down the road a bit.
But Blanchetown got a
bridge instead, which was
fine until they discovered
that it was not strong
enough to take modern
B doubles. So they built
another bridge.
Makes sense.
Terry Rogers, on the other
hand wanted to see the pub,
a very famous building,
built in 1858. Terry Rogers
gets the history and the
story behind moving a
whole pub.
Just by chance the convoy
was in Blanchetown on the
100th anniversary of
Lock # 1. There are 13 locks
in all along the Murray to
manage irrigation and
recreational use.
