Goolwa
SA’s Elbow
Goolwa, which means
Elbow in the Ngarrindjeri
language, has the distinction
to be the last town on the
Murray river and where the
fresh water of the Murray
River meets the salt water
of the Murray mouth.
The Goolwa Barrage was
built in 1935 to stop the salt
water flowing back into the
fresh water which supplied
the town with its water and
much needed irrigation
for farming.
Today, Goolwa is the place
to enjoy time out. Just
100km from Adelaide on
the Fleurieu Peninsula,
there is plenty to do and
see. Try some fishing at the
Murray mouth, cruise the
Coorong, step back in time
on the wood fired paddle
steamer PS Oscar W, find
fine wine and enjoy local
foods in the yesterday’s
restored buildings.
