Uncover Michael Jackson's Name
(The Gardner St. School Issue Campaign)
In October of 1989, Michael Jackson attended a dedication ceremony at the Gardner Street Elementary in Los Angeles to name the auditorium
of the school where he was once a sixth grader in his honor.
However, by 2003 the school decided to cover up Michael’s name and according to a newspaper article posted in LAist Daily: Jackson's name
had become more synonymous with tabloid fodder and his high profile legal troubles, particularly those involving children, and so the school decided to cover up his name on their
auditorium. Jackson Fans Campaign to Have Name on School Uncovered.
In March of 2010 the MJ Fan Community launched a campaign to have Michael Jackson’s
name uncovered. Hundreds of letters from fans were sent to LAUSD Superintendent,
Ramon Cortines. Fans were very concerned that Michael had been acquitted of the 2003
charges and his name remaining covered was unfair. The campaign received a wellspring
of media attention and after seven months of a concerted community effort Michael’s
name was uncovered.

For seven years, the letters proclaiming Michael Jackson Auditorium at Gardner Street Elementary
were covered, placed at the behest of parents shortly after the pop singer's arrest in 2003. Now, a
year after his death, the sign is back. (October 16, 2010|By Kate Linthicum, Los Angeles Times )
