He wanted to give the children in the City of Chicago and across the globe a place where they can come and express themselves through dance. This show was especially important to Chicago due to underprivileged areas coming off the back lash of slained black panther Fred Hampton Sr. on the west side of Chicago. To simply put it Soul Train got those kids off the street and into a TV studio dancing. George Ellis Johnson, an African-American entrepreneur and the founder of Johnson Products Company, an international cosmetics empire headquartered in Chicago, Illinois was Soul Train’s first sponsor. Don was the first African- American male to own a dance television program which has been syndicated around the world in many countries and various markets.
