& Festival of the Forest
The Torimba Festival is Ravenshoe ’ s biggest community event and is held annually in October . The word Torimba is derived from Tourism and Timber . The Torimba Festival which includes the timber craft exhibition known as the Festival of the Forest promotes Ravenshoe ’ s heritage as a former timber town as well as marketing the area for tourists to visit . Torimba fosters community spirit and unites the town and district . The Torimba Mardi Gras parade is example of community participation . The Torimba Committee is made up of local volunteers who always put in 100 % in order to create memorable festivals year after year . The grand opening will be held on October 1 from 10am to 6pm at Festival Hall , Grigg Street . One Million Stars to help end violence
Maria Gillanders and the Atherton Tai Chi group have been busy cutting up What ’ s On Magazines ... old issues , of course ! They are using them to create stars for the One Million Stars Project to end violence . If the goal is reached , stars from all over the world will come together in one large installation at the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games .“ The goal is to reach one million stars overall by July 2017 , the Tablelands is hoping to make 10 thousand ,” said Maria ,“ Anyone can help and contribute , we ’ ve been using What ’ s On Magazines as it ’ s the best paper for it ! I ’ ve tried around 7 different magazines , but What ’ s On ’ s gloss and thickness works really well . One issue makes 15 stars .” The Atherton Library is a registered Star Weave Community , all stars are taken there and hung up until it ’ s time to send them off to the Gold Coast . To find out how to fold stars , talk to the Atherton Library or visit onemillionstars . net . Have old What ’ s On Magazines ? We ’ d love to pass them on to weaving groups . Please drop them at the What ’ s On Office On Wednesdays from 10am to 4pm at 32 Mabel Street , Atherton . Feel free to drop in and collect old issue for your weaving group too !
