What's On Tablelands October 2018 - FINAL EDITION | Page 2
The end of an era

What’s On & Where To Go this topical magazine has come
a long way since its first edition in 2000. Whilst the number
of pages has increased, so has the circulation, readership and
appearance of the magazine.
October 2018 marks the end of an era with What's On going
to print for the very last time. The magazine has been part of
the Tablelands for over 18 years and the ‘go to’ publication for
what’s on across the region.
The magazine was started in late 2000 by founder Kathy
Edwards under the moniker Culture Shock. Her intent was
to create a local publication that would give Tablelanders
a place where they could reflect on who they are as a
community. Kathy moved to Australia from America,
and cites that coming from the ‘outside’ and joining the
community, she could see Tablelanders’ unique qualities and
spirit. “I could see all of your uniqueness, community energy
and spirit that I have not witnessed elsewhere in my travels,”
she said in her goodbye edition in 2006.
Kathy moved back to her family in America and sold What’s
On to Sandy Hayes. The magazine evolved to showcase
what's on around the Tablelands and Sandy worked on the
magazine for four years before selling to Katje Gibson (nee
Pyne) in January 2010—who had worked with Sandy at
What’s On from the beginning. In October 2017, the business
changed hands again to Nettie O’Connell, who as a graphic
designer, rebranded the magazine with a whole new look.
As the current owner of the magazine, Nettie says "It saddens
me to close the doors on this iconic local magazine that is
dearly loved. As the owner of two businesses and mum of
two boys—and all that entails—I’ve come to the realisation
that I can’t ‘do it all’. I’ve struggled with this decision and not
made it lightly, but my circumstances are such that I’m no
longer able to commit to the magazine after the October
2018 edition."
There has been quite a reaction to the news announced in
early September, with many locals sad to see the magazine
go. We would like to extend a huge thank you to all of our
local advertisers over the years and particularly those who
chose to advertise regularly – without your support the
magazine would not have been possible.
If anyone in the community would like to continue this iconic
publication please contact Nettie on 0416 120 852. The
business is currently listed for sale.
