to properly investigate stories”. Robert classes himself as
an old-style writer – pen and notepad are his tools before
transcribing his work onto computer. Research is also a
critical part of his work and one he does thoroughly.
It’s this work ethic and attention to detail that has placed him
in a position of trust amongst the media, the police and legal
fraternity. His thorough work on the Arnold-Leahy murders
garnered such respect that he can now speak directly with
a range of experts and insiders when investigating other
stories. This is particularly true now as he writes about the
Palmerville Station murder.
Working on his new book he’s found the police have been
particularly helpful in his research, understanding that
Robert’s work can actually help them get answers where their
resources perhaps don’t allow. The story of the disappearance
of gold prospector Bruce Schuler from Mareeba, is a story
that has captured Robert’s attention. It’s a chilling case but
an interesting and intriguing one. Bruce disappeared in 2012
whilst prospecting on the Palmer River, accessed via a lease
holding owned by Stephen and Dianne Struber known as
Palmerville Station. There are decades of ‘stories’ about the
tyrannical nature and intimidation tactics of the Strubers
and their treatment of campers on the Palmer River that runs
through the station.
The Strubers were found guilty of the murder of Bruce
Schuler even though his body has never been found—and
not likely to be—due the vastness and inaccessibility of the
Palmerville area. They were sentenced to life imprisonment
in 2015. Bruce’s wife, Fiona Splitt, lobbied the Queensland
Government to have legislation passed whereby prisoners
who are convicted of murder or manslaughter, must reveal
the location of the victim's body if they are to be eligible for
parole. This legislation is known as the “No Body, No Parole”
law. The Strubers have not disclosed the location of Schuler's
body. Robert is planning to publish this book in 2019.
Throughout his career Robert has lived by his mantra of
truth, honesty and respect. He has a strong belief that at all
times the victims and families of crime deserve the utmost
respect when reporting on them. They should be portrayed
with honesty and empathy, but also truthfully. With the fast
pace of life today, it’s a timely reminder to all media to take
the time to respect all subjects. Robert Reid – you are a true
gentleman and a living treasure. We thank you for your skills
