‘I’m just tired.’ Can be a mother’s
anthem. And there are oh so many
reasons for that! We never get to switch
off, we’re the CEO of the family, the
go-to person (even on the toilet), the
mother, the lover and the chef…phew!
That’s a big job! So, lap that Mother’s
Day up. Squeeze every ounce of love
and relaxation out of it and finish with
a pat on the back because you are
doing the most demanding job in the
world.
As well as a mother, I’m a nutritionist
but do I get any thanks for providing
a gourmet, nutritionally sound meal?
Every kid dreams of broccoli rice-
right? But I get hailed a demi-god if I
bring home fish and chips! So for all
the mums out there who are cooking
3 different meals, the mums grating
zucchini as we speak to slip unnoticed
into the spaghetti bolognaise, the
mums who desperately hope that the
kids won’t notice that they are adding
spinach to the smoothie, to any mother
anywhere who has been greeted with
groans as the meal you slaved over
is called ‘yuck’…it’s ok. You’re doing
a great job. You are feeding your kids
food that you have consciously chosen
and created and doing it every single
day. You are a hero!
This Mother’s Day I am giving you
permission, as a mother and a
nutritionist, to keep food simple. Not
just on Mother’s Day but every day.
Focus on produce not product. It’s way
simpler when we don’t need to read
product packaging.
Here’s a few ideas:
•Scrambled eggs with a side of spinach,
mushroom and tomato
•Slow cooked anything! It’s getting
cooler so break out the slow cooker for
some easy stews.
•Burgers! Meat or vegetarian. Loved by
all, and homemade are the bomb!
•Pick plates- well that’s what I call them!

Plates full of chopped veg, dips, cheese,
cold meat, beans, sprouts…whatever
takes your fancy, but everyone helps
themselves once it’s out.
•Fritters! Take your pick of veg and
grate, mix with a bit of egg and flour of
your choice and pan fry until golden.
You don’t need to break yourself (or the
bank) to feed your kids' body and soul.
Turn your focus to sharing simple, fresh
food. Ditch complicated recipes and
keep it simple. Food is only part of the
equation; sharing, talking, loving - they
all count too!
Remember this Mother’s Day that you
are awesome! Happy Mother’s Day
mums!
