Karen and her husband, who run the centre, have a real passion for wildlife. Having worked with Lumholtz tree kangaroos for over 20 years they have established a non-for-profit organisation to rescue and rehabilitate orphaned, injured or displaced tree kangaroos. The number of kangaroos in care has steadily increased each year. Karen says, “We used to get 1 to 2 kangaroos a year and now we get up to a dozen brought in each year, with many blind kangaroos being brought in after getting disoriented and lost." Karen has made wildlife her life study having completed a PHD in Lumholtz Tree Kangaroos. She is currently working with a vet optomologist and a pathologist to discover the reason for the optic nerve damage that is causing the blindness to occur. Currently all signs point to climate change and the hotter, drier 10 What’s On & Where To Go May 2019 weather that comes with it as being the main cause. Injury from domestic dogs and cars is the other primary reason kangaroos are brought in. As you can imagine, caring for and feeding 21 tree kangaroos is no small task. The centre has no government funding and is completely dependant on donations and volunteers. If you are interested in helping out, you can do so by making a donation, adopting a tree kangaroo or volunteering your time. Volunteers must be dedicated, reliable and regular workers. Other ways that you can help include: • Keep your pet dogs fenced or on a lead at all times • Report wild dog problems to the local council • Watch for tree kangaroos both day and night when driving • Plant local native trees The purpose of Tree Roo Awareness week is to increase awareness and appreciation of these incredible animals and to assist in the prevention of the extinction of the species. Learn more by visiting the Tree Roo Rescue stall at the Malanda markets in May. If you find an injured tree kangaroo, please ring 0427 790 694 or take it to the nearest vet.
