This is a really good thing because it will make it faster and more compatible with USB drives. The new format is already being used in iPhones and iPads and with the upgrade to the Macs all Apple devices will be computer. There is a risk if something goes wrong while updating you could lose everything during the formatting of the main hard drive. I also suggest unplugging every USB drive you have plugged in while updating for the same reason. The risk is small but it's much better than losing all you photos or files.
