Their lease expires in December and they need a new premises as soon as possible. “We are desperate! A new dwelling is needed, as this property is not compliant to building codes. A new building will cost $800 000. The Mareeba Shire council does not have the funding for the new building.” The captain, Jennifer Walsh, has been sailing this tall ship, Friends of the Animals since 2007. “We are sending out an S.O.S! Calling on all members of the community to help rescue the Animal Refuge!” The refuge takes in animals from Tablelands, Cooktown, Mossman, Daintree, Innisfail and Cairns. At the rate of one animal per day on average. Holding capacity is for 25 cats and 25 dogs, they re-home 200 dogs and 120 cats every year. Jennifer is concerned, “The consequence of having no Animal Refuge in existence will impact on the environment. There will be more dumping of unwanted litters and strays which in turn impact on livestock and be a burden on the environment.” “We have no government funding and rely heavily on donations to keep the animals fed and cover our overheads.” Animals are brought in to the refuge and handed over for re-homing, usually surrended by the owner i.e.: people re-locating, animal has behavioural issues, person can’t afford the care of the animal, person going into aged care, unwanted litters due to not de-sexing their pet. bottles.
