Henry VIII: The First Brexiteer? Last Night of the CSO Proms – Hands across the Pond
Saturday 1 July, 7.30pm, Cheltenham Town Hall
Sunday 25 June, 7.30pm, Pittville Pump Room
Off-shore island or an inextricable part of the Continent? Brexit is the latest
episode in a centuries-old debate-sometimes peaceful, often savage as in
the great wars against European hegemony and for world-dominion fought
with France in the 18 th century and Germany in the 20 th . He considers the
arguments from Henry VIII, who invented the idea of English uniqueness,
to the modern theorists of the Anglosphere, who carried the day in the
Referendum. This show does not include an interval. Over 14 Only. Our spring series of concerts in the Pittville Pump Room,
Old Worlds, New Worlds, provided an opportunity to compare and
contrast symphonic masterpieces from both sides of the Atlantic.
Now, in proms season, we echo that theme with an Anglo-American
“Last Night”: the favourites from Elgar, Wood and Parry, plus high-
kicking fun and drama from Copland and Bernstein.

David Starkey
Thursday 20 July, 8.00pm, Cheltenham Town Hall
“Once you’ve had a baby, you’re a parent and immediately you go from
being a madman (cool) to a mad dad (not cool). How can you be a
dangerous, edgy, rebel with a tiny, little daughter?
How do we make sense of the madness of our lives once we become
parents? What happens if she grows up to be like me? Or, worse, to date a
man like me?” Over 16 Only.
As part of the Cheltenham International Tango Festival we will be
offering two workshops for complete beginners to Argentine Tango,
an opportunity to practice their new skills during the days, join
dancing in the evening; and an inspiring talk on how to interpret the
music of tango.
Please note this show is a repeat of the May 2017 Russell Brand event.
