What Work Derbyshire 2015 / 2016  ICT AND HI-TECH ENGINEERING Technology is the main reason for old jobs disappearing. With nine out of 10 new jobs today needing some level of IT skills it’s hard to escape it. There are so many exciting and rewarding careers within science, engineering and technology – fashion, gaming, digital media, music, motor sport, aerospace… Why not become expert and help the UK become the best innovators in the world? Skills & qualities • Around 9,000 people work in the IT and telecoms sector in Derby City and Derbyshire1 and many more will be doing the same jobs but for other organisations. • 12% of the workforce in Derby City are employed in hi-tech jobs – four times the national average2. Useful subjects • IT industry needs more women - only 17% of the IT workforce is female3. • BT recruitment drive for jobs installing household broadband. • Automotive (vehicles) electronics, consumer electronics (for example digital cameras, tablets, smart phones) are growing areas and need skilled people to research and design new products and parts.
