Tomato also belongs to those plants that are known for having American origins. Although it grew in most parts of the continent, the Mayans were the first people who actually cooked it. However, even after the discovery of America the aboriginal people remained the only users of the plant as the immigrants believed it was poisonous. Nowadays it is “one of the most widely consumed vegetables in the world, second only to the potato”. And who could imagine the popular Italian cuisine without tomato sauce!
