The other, more recent story in the issue is that an other, bigger brand had to apologize to the Native Americans; the Victoria’s Secret underwear brand used an aboriginal headdress during their 2012 show. For many people it was “a display of ignorance toward tribal culture and history”.
According to The Huffington Post, “Victoria’s Secret has decided to pull the controversial look from the
fashion show’s broadcast and any other press”. Also, the brand provided a statement in which they apologized for the public. As Emanuella Grinberg from CNN states, the main point of the protesters against such cases is that creating controversies like pairing traditional Native American motives and patterns with clothing pieces of completely different style or origin and calling it ‘tribal’ or ‘Native American style’ is simply disrespectful and racist. Also, as Sasha Houston Brown explains, it is a good idea to promote and popularize tribal elements, but only if real Native Americans do it. This decision would support aboriginal designers and artisans.
