We met in middle school Awkward limbs playing violins In between sour notes We ’ d tell jokes And make each other laugh
You left for a while I missed your humor Missed your smile I tried filling the gap
HOLDING ON BY LEILA WRSCHKA
A CASTLE MADE OF SAND , WE BUILT AND
You came back
SCULPTED A few years later , MELTED AWAY SO EASILY BY
THE
We ’ d
PUSH grown , we
AND
’ d changed
PULL OF THE DEEP BLUE
But still clicked into place
It didn ’ t take long For you , again , To switch schools Twenty five minutes apart I decided to follow my heart And learned to drive
Our friendship was warm You showed me your books Your music , your family I showed you my paintings My thoughts and my ramblings
When it felt like the whole world Just couldn ’ t quite hear me You ’ d open an ear And understand clearly
High school got tricky You got stuck in your head Couldn ’ t breathe , stayed in bed . I got worried And my grip turned white
A CASTLE
Panic-filled
MADE nights
OF SAND , WE BUILT AND
SCULPTED fueled bitter , MELTED small fights AWAY SO EASILY BY
But in the back of my mind
THE PUSH AND PULL OF THE DEEP BLUE
I was waiting For you to find peace again
I held you on Halloween Because the tears wouldn ’ t stop The bathroom faucet dripped Your plastic flower crown slipped But your golden hair still glowed
Despite sniffles and sobs Sprawled out on white tile I try a few jokes And we finally laugh And we smile
