Suffocating

by Ashley Lohmann

Nothing in sight but the dark blue

That grows deeper

And more fascinating.

Waves roll above with a thunderous bellow,

Gently tugging my long hair with

The clear blue current.

A dancing kaleidoscope of light

Decorates my body

When the barrels curl above.

The sand swirls up with every passing beat

Of the ocean’s mighty heart.

A beat so strong, mine joins the melody.

But I can only hold my breath so long.

The necessary evil wrenches me towards the blind light.

Just as Darkness introduces himself.

My heart is left to compose

Its own trembling pulse.

The overrated air protrudes my chest

As uneasiness manifests within me.

The wind’s breath infiltrates my lungs,

Suffocating me with superficial judgements

The evil that keeps me alive.

The evil that keeps me from living.

Unfortunately, I can only hold my breath so long.
