In other words, I realised that for IBM to become a great company it would have to act like a great company long before it ever became one.
From the very outset, IBM was fashioned after the template of my vision. And each and every day we attempted to model the company after that template. At the end of each day, we asked ourselves how well we did, discovered the disparity between where we were and where we had committed ourselves to be, and, at the start of the following day, set out to make up for the difference.
Every day at IBM was a day devoted to business development, not doing business.
We didn’ t do business at IBM, we built one.”
Now, it ' s been over fifty years since Tom Watson Sr. shared his vision about IBM. Yes, there’ s been ups and downs. There’ s been historical losses. But IBM has since found its way back and is living true to its business slogan of continuous innovation- THINK.
Based on this powerful visionary from the 1950s, it is evident that things do
Once you have developed your vision, bring it to life, step by step, day by day. A vision, as we have seen, does not mean that you will not face obstacles and even failures. What it does is that it creates a mind map as to how to navigate out of the obstacle, to learn from the failure and to move forward.
not just become, they have to be created. They have to be created first in the mind. Once created in the mind, then every action should work towards enabling that vision. My favourite part is that you have to behave as if you are living right in your vision, even if it is yet to come to pass.
One may argue that such dedicated focus to bringing a vision to life, only makes sense for enterprises. Actually, that is not the case. As the world evolves, we are experiencing so many changes, that it has actually been recommended that individuals should view themselves and run their affairs like enterprises.
What does all of this mean for us?
It is time to take a step back and to ask ourselves,“ How do I want my life to look like?” And this is not a career thing only, it applies to all other areas of your life. Once you have developed your vision, bring it
to life, step by step, day by day. A vision, as we have seen, does not mean that you will not face obstacles and even failures. What it does is that it creates a mind map as to how to navigate out of the obstacle, to learn from the failure and to move forward.
It is undeniable that life has become so complex that we often get caught up in the humdrum of daily living, just moving from one day to the next. Basically, neglecting ourselves. However, in order for us to become our best selves, a responsibility we actually owe to ourselves, we must choose how we want to live our lives. We must live with intention. We must be vision led.
