EDITOR’ S LETTER

The first WGSA Muse Awards are finally here!

The response to our first online issue was phenomenal; I’ d like to thank our readership for their loyalty and the content providers for their support.

First off I’ d like to say congratulations to the WGSA Chair- Harriet Meier – and Richard H Nosworthy for launching the WGSA Muse Awards( pg 12), the first-ever local awards that exclusively honour our talented South African writers and WGSA members. The WGSA MAG will cover the event and get you exclusive access to the winners. So watch this space.
As with last month’ s issue, we added a‘ Made in SA’ section to promote proudly South African content. Now we’ ve added three new sections:‘ Watch Out’( pg 74) is a two-page treat of riveting online videos about screenwriting mixed with some trailers.
Then we have‘ Festivals’( pg 79) to give hyphenates a quick run-down each month of film festivals which support SA filmmakers. Last but not least we added‘ Scripts Now!’( pg 105), which lets you download full scripts penned by our international comrades.
As for the rest of the magazine- the July issue is one of the busiest with the Durban International Film Festival( DIFF) taking much of the spotlight. The DIFF Report( pg 30) is comprehensive, hitting the major turning points from South Africa’ s oldest film festival.
The biggest story to come out of DIFF was the censorship of Jahmil Qubeka’ s feature Of Good Report. We decided to look at the topic of film subjectivity and how censorship can get out of control( pg 46).
Then in TV land, 7de Laan celebrated their 3000th episode a few months back. We got hold of Danie Odendaal and he eventually found some time in his busy schedule to give us a quick interview( pg 20) about being at the helm of one South Africa’ s most beloved soaps.
Finally, this e-magazine was designed to give all performance writers locally, continentally and globally a concise monthly update on important entertainment news in South Africa. That being said, I also see this magazine as serving- and building- a community, and welcome any suggestions or comments. Please don’ t hesitate to contact me.
