Grade 2 Memories

Grade 2 Memories

We had tons of memorable moments this year that are bound to stay with the girls for many years to come, and hopefully stand out as key instances of fun, friendship and growth.
We kicked off the year with a focus on healthy living where we looked at the importance of hygiene and health – even getting to brush our teeth at school( this was quite amusing). We explored being chefsin-the-making when we hosted our own version of Masterchef – getting to shop for ingredients and prepare a healthy snack.
In the second term we started the prelude to“ The Olympics” by learning about the history of the Olympic Games and building South African pride by expanding our general knowledge of SA Olympians. The girls put their acting skills to work by taking on the role of their favourite Olympian and having their parents video tape them in an interview setting for an oral. The highlight of the term was definitely our Grade 2 Mini Olympics where the girls competed in 10 kid-friendly Olympic themed events. Fun was had by all, including the parents present, who showed off their athletic abilities in a relay. In the second term, we donned our author hats and pens and explored“ The Adventures of the Wishing Chair”, by Enid Blyton, and the girls wrote their own‘ wishing chair’ adventure stories.
In the second half of the year we made animal discoveries as zoologists. The girls loved their trip to the Iziko Museum on an animal factfinding expedition where they drew sketches and wrote interesting facts about exciting animals. They got to be pet owners when they created their own pet rocks, gave them identities and looked after them for the school holidays. The infamous‘ Lorax’ made an appearance in our classrooms in the third term. The girls all shared his love for nature, and dislike for the nasty‘ Once-ler’ – even writing strongly-worded letters of complaint about his bad treatment of the environment. As future book critics, the girls reviewed the story of The Lorax by Dr Seuss, in a lively and colourful book report.
Needless to say they were busy little bees aiming for accuracy in academics, being more aware of the environment and showing a greater acceptance of themselves and others. Ultimately, Grade 2 was awesome!
