Cape Town Science Centre Outing A buzzing, bubbling and mind-boggling experience All of the Grade 5 outings have been amazing, however the Science Centre outing was absolutely mind-blowing. We were first warm-heartedly welcomed by some of the leaders. Our leader, Tasneem, was really fun and made our experience unforgettable. She showed us some really interesting things like the Microsoft future classroom and the future school bus. After showing us some of the most astonishing things we have ever seen our leader took us to watch a science show. It was filled with brain teasers and explosions. It was also filled with very useful information and science experiments. We were then allowed to explore all of the experiments on the main floor. It was really a spectacular experience because there were so many different experiments. After that we had a short break and all we wanted to do was keep on exploring the Science Centre. Next we went back to the main floor to build walls in teams of six. If the wall was built correctly it would not break when you tried to hit it. Subsequently we went into another building and the walls and windows were painted black and there was only a tiny stream of light coming out of a small window. There was a screen in front of the little speck of light and with the help of the light we could see the builders working in the building site opposite the Science Centre. Then we walked into another room which had a ginormous machine known as a “camera obscura” (one of the very few light refraction cameras in the world) that could show us what was happening outside. It could even go all around the block in a circular motion, so we could see what was happening all around us. Our last activity made us focus specifically on potential and kinetic energy. We also made our own balloon-powered cars, which we were allowed to take back to school. The Science Centre was the most exciting outing we have ever had and we will never forget the unforgettable moments. Nai'la van Graan, Khololukhulu Mbuyazi and Hannah Isaacs 45
