The four themes for 2018 have been Fantastic Friendships, Adventure is ge R – Geor Out There, Amazing Africa and Girls Rule. Each theme gave the library a chance to showcase its fabulous collection of books and encourage our girls to read as widely as possible. The library has been bubbling over with educational exploration and learner-centred fun this year, with learners putting pen to paper or should we say finger to iPad to create their own stories, and after school groups playing around with robotics kits and further strengthening their computational thinking. From impassioned Grade 7 debates to Book Week performances; the library has been a place for fun, experimentation and learning. Book Week saw the library transform once again; with the theme “Amazing Africa” encouraging the entire school to get lost in the world of literary fantasy while enjoying books from our beautiful continent. The week started off with the local author Penny Haw doing a private reading of her new book “Nicko” for our girls in the library. An annual favourite, “Hooked on Books” returned to Wynberg and once again had us spellbound with an amazing set of performances. The week continued with a number of exciting events and activities, including a breathtaking story-telling experience with renowned storyteller Gilly Southwood who brought her own special brand of oral storytelling to life with the theme “Stories my Gogo told me”. As always it culminated in the much-anticipated fancy dress day and our library monitors and staff performing a hilarious skit, which had the school enthralled. During the year, well over 300 new books across a number of genres were introduced to our library, ensuring many more special moments curled up on a beanbag with a new book. In the WGJS library, our girls are encouraged to read widely and to use books not only to learn new things, but to get lost in new worlds and to explore and learn more about other countries and cultures in the process.
