has the WPA helped you navigate them?

New to the Industry 10 years ago, it was intimidating to learn and discuss the business with people who have 40 years’ experience and generations of knowledge.

I met customers at the WPA conference and set up visits to see their operations to learn about lumber and how it varies in different areas of the country, new vs recycled pallets, big vs small company operations. The conference also provides guest speakers to discuss latest trends or key issues facing the industry.

From your perspective, what are the emerging opportunities or challenges for the pallet industry?

We sell pallet nailing machines and I see opportunities related to improved quality production and quality controls, AI and other operation efficiency improvements and material handling automation reducing ergonomic load and staffing. I think we will see improved equipment offerings for smaller runs, non-GMA and block pallet small to mid-size production levels. Continued partnerships to improve customized and more complete offerings to customers.

What advice would you give to new members of the WPA to maximize the benefits of their membership?

Get out of your comfort zone, meet new people, attend social events and play in the golf tournament! Get involved and embrace the event. Find the veterans of the industry and set up a coffee meeting. The people are great and are willing to help new members learn about the industry. Be curious and ask a lot of questions.
