What Is a Strategic Plan and Why Do I Need One?
Not having a strategic business plan is like driving in the dark because, without a plan, you lack direction and visibility. Just as driving without headlights makes it difficult to see the road and anticipate obstacles, running a business without a strategic plan means you can't clearly see your goals, understand your resources, or anticipate challenges.
Imagine you’re driving a car on an unfamiliar route—without a map or GPS. You might know your starting point, but how do you reach your destination without a clear route? Similarly, running a business without a strategic plan is like driving blind. You may have a vision, but without a roadmap, achieving long-term goals becomes unlikely.
Understanding a Strategic Plan
A strategic plan is a document that outlines an organization’s long-term goals and the steps
needed to achieve them. It serves as a roadmap that guides the business from its current state to its desired future. This involves setting clear objectives, identifying the resources required, and determining the best strategies for success.
Strategic plans typically include elements like a vision statement, mission statement, goals, action plans, and performance metrics. Unlike a business plan, which often focuses on day-to-day operations, a strategic plan has a

broader, longer-term focus. It allows companies to look beyond immediate challenges and align efforts toward achieving sustainable growth.
Alignment of efforts organization-wide is crucial. We’ve all heard about “silo” thinking, where every department is trying to do its best, but sometimes to the overall detriment of corporate success. For example, the procurement manager could make a great buy on nails, but if they don’t measure up and lead to manufacturing issues or angry customers, they don’t move your company forward. Likewise, a better freight rate is nice to have, but if the load is late, what is the overall impact? Goal alignment within an organization is essential.
