With an infectious smile and the boundless energy that you might expect from someone who spent his formative years as a rock band drummer , Jeff Calavan was a welcome face at WPA Annual Meetings for almost two decades . Then career choices took him in another direction . Who knew it would be a path leading from red alder to french oak . When we caught up recently , Jeff caught us by surprise . In fact , he said , the WPA Annual meeting was the genesis of his enduring relationship with wine . It was the spot where his foray into fine reds first began , enjoying a glass or two of cabernet with colleagues such as Pat Sherry , Tom Thayer , Gary Crane , and other members past and present . Representing Northwest Hardwoods , he served as chair of the WPA membership committee for several years .
