Dear WPA members and friends,

Glenn Meeks

Executive Vice President

Western Pallet Association

March is an important month for many pallet companies. Contracts are being reviewed, pricing conversations are happening, and business owners are taking a hard look at their costs and margins for the year ahead. In a business where lumber, labor, and transportation can shift quickly, disciplined decision-making matters. The theme of this issue - pricing, margins, and survival economics - speaks directly to that reality.

Several of this month’s columns approach the challenge from different angles. Emily Clark’s market analysis looks at how regional pricing pressures and cost drivers are shaping negotiations across the pallet market. Kat Vasquez explores how new financial and operational tools (especially AI-enabled systems) can help companies move beyond lagging indicators and make better decisions using real-time data. Brint Walker examines a risk many operators overlook: insurance coverage that looks adequate on paper but leaves dangerous gaps when a major loss occurs. And Kevan Grinwis reminds us that leadership often shows up when the pressure is highest and decisions can’t wait.

I’d like to welcome our newest contributor, Nunzio Presta. He will be writing a column that focuses on the vital topic of marketing for pallet companies. In this issue, he tackles another issue many pallet companies face when the market starts treating pallets like a pure commodity and price becomes the only conversation.

These topics highlight something experienced business owners know - running a pallet company successfully requires more than moving wood. It requires clear pricing discipline, strong operations, sound risk management, and leadership that can make difficult decisions when the market tightens.

At the WPA, our goal is to bring together unique perspectives from across the industry so members can make better decisions. And the strength of this association comes from the willingness of industry professionals to share what they are learning.
