20 WESTERN PALLET
"The fly-In was amazing," she said. "The NWPCA did a fantastic job of organizing the event. It was a jam packed day full of visits on the Hill where we were able to speak to sustainability, the wooden pallet being the choice when it comes to supply chain and packaging., immigration reform and our need for labor." The upcoming farm bill and forestry management were also topics of interest.
"Like many pallet companies, especially here in Southern California, Elias and I have been deeply concerned and extremely challenged by our current business climate," said Beatrice Vasquez of Oxnard Pallet Company.
"We have never experienced what is currently happening.," she continued, "not to this extent. I share this concern because I feel it was especially important to help be a part of the 2023 NWPCA Washington DC Fly-In representing family-owned pallet businesses."
The Washington Fly-In, a significant event organized by NWPCA, commenced with an evening reception attended by distinguished congressional members, including US Representatives Andrea Salinas (D-OR) and Darren Soto (D-NJ). This reception provided a platform for meaningful discussions and engagement between industry representatives and these esteemed lawmakers.
The following morning, attendees gathered for a breakfast briefing led by Jason Ortega, NWPCA's VP of Public Affairs, in collaboration with BIPAC and Lot Sixteen, a prominent lobbying and communications firm. This informative session provided valuable insights and updates on important legislative matters impacting the wooden pallet industry.
Equipped with industry talking points and fueled by enthusiasm, NWPCA members embarked on visits to Capitol Hill. This dedicated effort allowed them to directly engage with various congressional representatives and their staff, advocating for the industry's interests and expressing their concerns. The members' interactions were guided by their extensive knowledge and passionate commitment to the wooden pallet industry.
"It was fascinating to witness what goes on in the Representatives offices and to see the Capitol and be near the White House and its surrounding historical landmarks," Beatrice Vasquez said. "We really appreciated getting to shake hands and speak with Representative Andrea Salinas from Oregon to ask about making BioPreferred more
effective by giving it more funding and flexibility."
To wrap up the event, a closing reception was held at the prestigious Capitol Hill Club, where congressional members US Representatives John James (R-MI) and Juan Ciscomani (R-AZ) were warmly welcomed.
"I can’t wait to go again," Dietrich stated. "It really was such a great and rewarding experience to be amongst all the colleagues in the industry talking about the issues and supporting such a great cause."
