Dealing with freight costs
One of the basics of freight optimization is to keep trucks loaded and to avoid “deadheading” or “bobtailing.” Coordinate trailer drop-off and pickup to minimize freight expense, one recycler suggested. Another thing that some companies are doing is using their fleet to transport other goods besides pallets. But it isn’t always an opportunity if you are short on trucks or drivers. One company was hauling fresh produce as a backhaul but then found itself stretched to make its pallet deliveries. It is essential to be upfront with customers about freight costs. They are facing similar challenges and therefore have an understanding of the situation.
One recycler is paying to train drivers it recruits from its workforce. After becoming licensed, they must sign a two-year contract to stay with the firm.
Multiple recyclers emphasized the importance of maintaining good working relationships with the freight brokers they engage.
Ideas about pricing and starting in the pallet business
Recycle Record and Pallet Profile Weekly are good sources of pallet pricing information, according to participants. Attending WPA and NWPCA meetings and WPA online events can help create networking opportunities. To integrate a sustainability message into your pallet marketing, take advantage of the resources at naturespackaging.org.
These were just some tips, and best practices shared at the June WPA Master Learning Group. For best value, plan to attend future online MLG and webinar sessions. Be sure to register at westernpallet.org.
"Core prices have increased and it's definitely still a little tight out there. In Southern California, so many of us are just trying to get our hands on what we can.”
