FEBRUARY 2021

biobased product is composed of biological products including renewable domestic agricultural materials, renewable chemicals, and forestry materials. The increased development, purchase, and use of biobased products increase the use of renewable agricultural resources and contribute to reducing adverse environmental and health impacts.

The Biden administration has made it clear from the beginning that climate change, clean energy, green infrastructure, and overall sustainability will be top priorities. President Biden has already passed multiple executive orders tackling the climate crisis. Programs like BioPreferred will continue to play a critical role over the next four years. This environmental focus presents an opportunity for our industry to emphasize the value of the renewable carbon content of wood pallets. BioPreferred allows manufacturers to label pallets for what they are: a 100% biobased product vital to a renewable and sustainable supply chain.

The USDA BioPreferred program consists of two parts: mandatory purchasing requirements for Federal agencies and their contractors, and a voluntary product certification and labeling initiative. All Federal agencies and their contractors have a sustainable product acquisition mandate to purchase biobased products identified by the BioPreferred program. The official USDA Certified Biobased Product label, specifically designed to empower consumers to readily identify products with verified biobased content, can be added to any pallet manufactured with PDS. PDS users can proudly use the label showing they are 100% biobased products:

- In a certified product or package;

- In product literature, for a certified

product or package;

- On a website to identify a certified

product or package;

- In advertisements where it is used

next to or on a certified product or

package;

- On product point-of-sale displays;

- In collateral materials;

- In catalogs and user manuals;

- In electronic media (procurement -

databases, websites); and

- In promotional and educational

outreach materials.
