Rancho Las Palmas Then and Now

The history of Rancho Las Palmas Resort dates back to the mid-20th century. Originally developed as the Desert Air Hotel & Resort in the 1950s, it was a private club known for its airstrip, which attracted affluent visitors and celebrities. The resort quickly became a popular retreat for Hollywood stars, politicians, and social elites seeking a secluded getaway.

In the 1970s, the property underwent significant changes. The airstrip was removed to make way for a golf course, and the resort was rebranded as Rancho Las Palmas Country Club. This transformation marked a shift from a private club to a more inclusive, yet still upscale, destination. The resort expanded its amenities, adding tennis courts and additional guest rooms, further cementing its status as a premier destination in the Coachella Valley.

The 1980s and 1990s saw continued growth and development at Rancho Las Palmas. The resort embraced a family-friendly approach, introducing features like the Splashtopia water park, which includes a lazy river, slides, and a sandy beach, catering to both adults and children. This period also witnessed the enhancement of the spa facilities, offering guests a comprehensive wellness experience.

In 2012, Rancho Las Palmas underwent a major renovation, upgrading its 444 guest rooms and suites, modernizing its 27-hole golf course, and revamping its dining options. These renovations were aimed at blending the resort's traditional charm with contemporary luxury, ensuring it remained a top choice for discerning travelers.

Rancho Las Palmas was frequented by many Hollywood stars, including Bob Hope, shown at right.
